Pre-Operative Information

At Kamm McKenzie OBGYN we operate at Wake Med on New Bern Avenue and Wake Med North.

Once you and your physician decide on a surgery, you will work with our surgery nurse coordinator to schedule a date and time for your operation. She will tell you where to go and at what time you need to be there. Depending on your health status, you may be asked to have a phone interview with a representative from the WakeMed anesthesia department, or you may even be asked to set up a pre-operative visit with the anesthesiologist. If you have any major medical condition, we will likely require a medical clearance letter from your primary care provider. Your health is of the utmost importance to us, and we want to make sure your body can tolerate the stress an operation.

After your surgery date is scheduled and you have been cleared to proceed, you need to start preparing for your surgery day. You must find transportation to and from the hospital. In addition, you must know that you are to have NOTHING BY MOUTH after midnight the evening before your surgery. This includes liquids like water or coffee. The only exception is a sip of water to take approved oral medications the morning of your surgery.

It is important to refrain from use of aspirin, products containing aspirin, or any other blood thinner for 7 days before your surgery, unless otherwise discussed with your physician.

Depending on the type of surgery you are getting, your physician may ask you to do a bowel cleansing. Two common techniques we use are below:

Magnesium Citrate

  • Go to any pharmacy and buy 2 bottles of magnesium citrate (no prescription needed)
  • The day before surgery drink the first bottle at 12 noon and the second at 3pm
  • Once you start the bowel preparation, it is important that you do not eat solid foods. You can enjoy clear liquids, including broths.
  • Remember, nothing by mouth after midnight

Miralax with Gatorade

  • Go to any pharmacy and buy two 32oz bottles of a light colored Gatorade. In addition, buy a 238gm bottle of Miralax and Dulcolax 5mg tablets (no prescription needed for either)
  • The day before your surgery, you need to be on a liquid diet starting at noon.
  • At 3pm take 2 tablets of the 5mg Dulcolax.
  • At 5pm, mix half of the Miralax bottle into each of the Gatorade bottles and shake until fully dissolved. Drink one 8oz glass every 30 minutes until the solution is gone
  • At 7pm, take 2 more tablets of the 5mg Dulcolax.
  • Remember, nothing by mouth after midnight
