In-Office Post-Procedure Instructions

Pain

  • Motrin (Ibuprofen) 800mg take 1 tablet every 8 hours as needed.
  • Percocet or Lortab, for pain not controlled by Motrin, 1 or 2 tablets, every 4-6 hours as needed.
  • Discomfort is usually the most significant 2-6 hours after the procedure. Please take your pain medications as directed in order to minimize the pain you may feel over the next 8-24 hours. Please notify the office for severe pain that is not well-controlled by your pain medications.
  • Also, a heating pad to the abdomen can provide additional relief.

Nausea

  • Phenergan 25mg take 1 tablet every 6 hours as needed for nausea.
  • To help control nausea, try clear liquids, ginger ale, or other carbonated drink. If it is severe and not controlled by medication, please call our office.

Fever

  • This may be a sign of infection. If you experience chills, take your temperature immediately.
  • Please call us if it is 100.6 or more during the first 3 days after your procedure.

Diet

  • You should eat whatever you feel like eating after this procedure, as long as you are not experiencing severe nausea.

Vaginal Discharge

  • Discharge following this procedure can be variable. Anything from a watery discharge with occasional blood-staining, passage of clumps of gray tissue, to menstrual-like bleeding for up to 4 weeks is normal. You may also have a minimal discharge. Please do not use tampons or douche for 2 weeks following the procedure. No intercourse for 1 week or until excessive discharge is diminished, whichever comes last. You may take tub baths after 48 hours and showers at any time.

Activity

  • Rest as much as possible the day of your procedure. You may resume normal activities 1-2 days after the procedure. Work may be resumed 1-2 days as well.

Avoid

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages, including beer or wine, for at least 24 hours following the procedure.
  • Do not drive a motor vehicle; operate machinery or power tools for at least 24 hours, or for the period of time you are taking narcotics for pain control.
  • No swimming or tub bath for at least 48 hours.
  • Do not make important decisions or sign legal documents for 24 hours.

  • You experience difficulty breathing
  • Fever 100.6 or more during the first 3 days after your procedure
  • Excessive pain not controlled with above listed medications
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding (soaking > 4 pads in 4 hours)
  • You have not urinated within 6 hours of your arrival home
  • Unusual pain or swelling

*If you find that you cannot contact your physician, but feel your signs and symptoms warrant a physician’s attention, go immediately to the nearest Emergency Room.
