Gynecologic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is usually performed to evaluate the bladder, ovaries, uterus, and/or cervix.  This is achieved through both vaginal and abdominal approaches.    Many of our patients are evaluated using both approaches to get a complete picture of their anatomy.  In the abdominal approach a small transducer is passed over the lower abdomen after the application of gel.  In the vaginal approach, a wand shaped to fit into the vagina is covered with a thin sheath, like a condom, and lubricated before being gently placed into the vagina.  The vaginal approach to ultrasound gives us the ability to see a small area more clearly.

There are many different reasons that your provider may recommend an ultrasound for you.  The most common include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Follow up of ovarian cysts
  • Evaluation of uterine fibroids
  • Heavy periods
  • Irregular periods
  • Absence of a period
  • Locating an IUD
  • Infertility
  • Bleeding after menopause

When your provider orders an ultrasound for you, our front office staff will help you to schedule your appointment.  On the day of your ultrasound, one of our sonographers will show you to your room and request that you undress from the waist down.  You will be given a drape to place across your lap for modesty.  Occassionally, especially in the case of irregular bleeding, you may be having vaginal bleeding on the day of your appointment.  Please keep your appointment, just be sure to let your sonographer know so she can prepare the room appropriately.
