My Take on DHA

The short version is that we don’t really know for sure if the DHA in prenatal vitamins has a huge benefit; more research is necessary. Because there is potential benefit and no downside to taking it, it seems reasonable to add a DHA supplement if you desire.

To Circumcise or to not Circumcise, that is the Question....

The evidence-based approach does not add that much insight.  There is literature to suggest a decrease in transmission of STDs and of penile cancers, but these effects are too small to warrant routine recommendation of circumcision.  Then there are the surgical risks of the procedure, which are rare in the hands of an experienced provider.  These include bleeding, infection, and damage to the penis, along with the possible need for a revision in the future.

Demystifying Antidepressant Use in Pregnancy

Depression is very, very common and its prevalence peaks during childbearing years.  Many women start their pregnancies on an antidepressant and the questions then ensue….

  • Have I caused harm to my baby?
  • What are the risks to my newborn if I am on an antidepressant?
  • Should I continue using the antidepressant or should I stop?
  • Should I switch do a different antidepressant?
  • Should I wean off the antidepressant at some point?
  • Can I breast feed if I am taking an antidepressant?

 Let’s address these questions individually, but with the caveat that there is no 100% perfect answer.  Each patient’s individual risks and benefits must be assessed and the patient and her physician can then decide on an effective strategy.
