For those of you who have seen me in the office, you know I love my iPhone. I use an app for my “pregnancy wheel” before I see each pregnant patient to calculate the exact gestational age. It replaces the old paper wheel that I carried around during residency. So, it got me thinking, what apps are out there for patients.

The short version is that we don’t really know for sure if the DHA in prenatal vitamins has a huge benefit; more research is necessary. Because there is potential benefit and no downside to taking it, it seems reasonable to add a DHA supplement if you desire.

I started with Kamm McKenzie OBGYN 8/16/2010. As a necessary part of preparing for the OBGYN oral board examination (FYI: Drs. Privette, Rush, Wheeler, and I all passed!!), I had to keep track of all my obstetrical procedures. I thought it would be interesting to share the numbers with you and then provide some insight into them.

The evidence-based approach does not add that much insight. There is literature to suggest a decrease in transmission of STDs and of penile cancers, but these effects are too small to warrant routine recommendation of circumcision. Then there are the surgical risks of the procedure, which are rare in the hands of an experienced provider. These include bleeding, infection, and damage to the penis, along with the possible need for a revision in the future.
